This painting started as watercolor on museum-mounted Gessoboard. I stained the sides of this board (to enhance and preserve the wood), then painted an Asian elephant in an imaginary landscape. Using Walnut Ink and a calligraphy brush, I outlined the elephant to help it ‘pop’. Encaustic medium was then brushed around areas of the painting, offering a dream-like texture and appearance. The stately calligraphic symbol stands for “to listen”.
